Last month we bought a stack of books. Doesn't happen often since we mostly use the library. But some books you just know are going to take a month or more to read and the 2 or 4 week library lending term isn't sufficient. Other books we want to own for reference.
When I went to find space on the bookshelves and bedside tables it seemed like a good opportunity to de-clutter and simplify our home library. One of those rainy day activities
I cleaned them out using keep, giveaway, and swap
piles. I decided to finally join PaperBack Swap
though I have only a few titles available right now. I just mailed my first book yesterday, "An American Childhood" by Annie Dillard. I just couldn't get into that book, hopefully someone else enjoys it more.
kids books that went to Goodwill
I'm going through the other three piles now and want to make a few of those books and DVD's available as giveaways for you (I'm loathe to say "my readers" - sounds so, I don't know, presumptuous).
This is how it's going to work. This could get really messy so to make it easy I'm going to work it this way: I've divided the books up according to my different blog sections and the first person to comment and say "I want the Mama Speak
etc... books or DVDs" gets them. I don't want to have 10 separate mailings so I'm just trying to keep things simple.
Book & DVD Giveaway
Here's what I've got:
"The Hospitality of Home Church: A Woman's Perspective" A short self-published book by Shelley Howland with a few recipes in the back. Let me warn you, this is not for everyone. It is written from quite a conservative Christian background (I tend to be a moderate on that spectrum but read & appreciate opinions from both ends). Also Six Weeks to a Simpler Lifestyle
, a practical, soul-searching devotional type book on living simply, in all aspects. Picks up where Freedom of simplicity
(not giving away - I don't own it) leaves off. Based on Scriptures, good for personal or group study.
The May-June and July-August Editions of Home Education magazine
and the Bible based Sing & Play Ole Music DVD
(kind of like karaoke for kids) music sing-along.
Urban Homestead Rawsome
, a raw recipe book. Given to us and although we eat a lot of raw salads, veggies and desserts
we've never used it.
Neighborhood Saving God's Green Earth
a book about rediscovering the church's responsibility to environmental stewardship and Wal-Mart the high cost of low price
. Watching this movie (take everything you read or watch with a grain of salt) turned me off Wal-Mart
I've gotten a few questions on what books we do own for homeschooling and what to do about late readers and I plan to address those in another post so stay tuned.
