That's great...its fun to experiment...I think that's the best way to learn. I had all sorts of issues capturing action at a school football game that was played at night. Trying to compensate for the light was difficult. After much fiddling with the ISO and shutter speed a bigger flash did the trick.

I'm a little timid in Shutter mode, too, and hate missing the moments while I figure it out. Photojojo just came out with a post on this, and I can't wait to play around with it.
