No word of a lie, last month my 7 year opened the door to the fridge, found a bowl of unidentified veggie slaw and asked me (in all seriousness), "why is there compost in fridge?" I had a good laugh about that one since that "compost" was our lunch.

Today's giveaway will hopefully help you prepare plant based meals that don't look like compost!

DVD Giveaway

I've mentioned before that we've taught health classes and done nutritional counseling. As part of our learning and research for those roles we have purchased various books and videos over the years. We are always simplifying our stack of these though and during a recent purge found this DVD to give away to a lucky reader.

Try as I might I cannot find a link for this through the source we bought it from. Maybe it's out of print now. If so, you'll be getting a limited edition copy!

The DVD is a three part presentation titled Creative Low-Fat Vegan Cuisine by Jill Nussinow; cooking teacher, Registered Dietitian and freelance writer (aka The Veggie Queen). Here's a further description from the back:

When you finish watching my entertaining presentations you will know all about grains, legumes, fruits, vegetables, and condiments. More importantly you will see how to turn them into delectable dishes that your family and friends will love. Because I use unprocessed, natural ingredients, you can count on recipes that will allow you to effortlessly lose excess weight and regain lost health.

To enter the giveaway please leave a comment here (not at facebook) by Tuesday, January 26th at midnight. Comments will then be closed and one name will be chosen randomly.

Tomorrow we go hiking to a favorite spot of mine, a little mountain right on the ocean. Sea, sky and autumn foliage, I can't wait. A day of being together outdoors. But today was a work-at-home day, a day of doing. I spent most of it in the kitchen but I popped out now and then to take photos of the everyday beauty surrounding me.

What I don't have photos of is the woodworking, driving, shopping, drawing, planning, researching, designing, cleaning, movie watching and more that was done by everyone in the house. A lovely full fall day at home. Tomorrow... the mountains, oceans and woods!

Hope you're all having a wonderful weekend of doing and being with your loved ones.

the women will play. Well not play so much as putter around.

Our men went hiking today without us women. They hiked the highest mountain in Maine, Mount Katahdin, a good 4 hours from our home and the day involved leaving the house at the ungodly hour of 4:00am. I was more than happy to bow out of this one and let my husband and son go with some guy friends this time.

So the girls and I stayed home and enjoyed this rainy fall day together. I have no photos to share what we did since Damien took the camera (smile). That's ok. Photography would of distracted me from what we did do. We read, I hung up family photos I've been meaning to do for months, I cleaned my desk area and had a long chat with my sister-in-law on the phone.

Tonight the girls and I watched the romantic comedy New In Town, very sweet and funny. I recommend it. I used to talk more about movies on this blog but since adopting my personal rule of only posting my own photos for images I find it hard to work movies into my posts. That and I hardly watch movies these days.

And now it's thundering and lightening outside, very strange for an October night, and I'm so happy I didn't leave the comforts of my own home today.

I posted a couple items of interest over at ADVENTUREinPROGRESS today. Firstly a recipe for Cashew "ginger cookie" nut bars. Yes, they are as good as they sound and taste just as great at home as on the trail. I also wrote about an easy menu for hiking days. If it isn't apparent already hiking is a big part of our lives and we are looking for ways to share what we've learned with other families who are interested in being outdoors together. If you wonder how to plan food for a day out in the woods that post may be helpful to you.

I am now anxiously awaiting the arrival of my men back home. G'nite all.
